Noor Jahan: The Astonishing Singer of Pakistan
Noor Jahan was the melodious singer 🎤 and actress who first worked well in the British. After her great struggle, she also showed her hard work in Pakistan. She was well known for the title “Malika-e-Tarannum” in Pakistan. Moreover, she had a great command of Hindustani Classical music as well as all types of music. She rendered a great service to Pakistan by her songs 🎶 and poems. Noor Jahan has sung more than 20,000 songs and worked in almost 40 movies of Pakistan. She is also remembered as the first female film director of Pakistan.
Birth of Noor Jahan
Madam Noor Jahan was born 👶 on 21st September 1926 in Kasur. Her name was selected as Allah-Rakhi Wasai by her parents.
Early Career and Progress
At the age of 6, Noor Jahan performed in Calcutta on the stage of popular musician Ghulam Ahmed Chishti. Her first big break was given to her by Dalsukh Pancholi for his film “Gul-e-Bakavli”
Noor Jehan’s first supernova movie was released in 1942 named “Khandaan” and the movie “Zeenat” in 1945 which hit the cinemas. She has sung five melodious songs for this movie. By the interesting story and Madam Noor Jahan’s songs, this movie 🎬 became a much-awaited film 😍 among the people of India. Moreover, Noor played the role of a woman named “Zeenat” in the movie “Zeenat”.
Madam Noor Jahan Wedding 👰
Noor Jahan tied the knot with Shokat Rizvi in 1947 who was the director of the movie “khaandan”. But as time flew, he divorced Malika-e-Tarannum due to some personal problems. She took custody of her three children 👪 and left her husband. It was difficult for her to raise the children and work side by side. So, she married another filmmaker Ejaz Durrani in 1959 who was about nine years younger than Noor Jahan.
With the passage of time, her husband pressurized her to give up acting, so she did. However, her last role as an actress was in an Indian movie “Mirza Ghalib” and “Baaji”. But she didn’t lead the main role in the movie “Baaji’. However, Ejaz Durrani also divorced her in 1971 and left her with three children. Later, she was also married 👰 to the actor Yousaf Khan.
Noor Jahan Songs
It will be a shame for a non-Urdu who is not familiar with the beauty of Noor Jahan’s songs. She worked as a playback singer 🎤 and got many awards 🏆. Singing was not a difficult task for Jahan. As it was just a physical and emotional draining for her. She grew old but there was no change in her voice. She also sang for Pakistani actresses Neeli and Reema. Moreover, she had a great interest in attending the live concerts of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Lata Mangeshkar.
Lata Mangeshkar while talking about Noor Jahan said,
“Noor Jahan can sing as high and as low because the quality of her voice doesn’t bother it”.
That is the reason Sabiha Khanam give her the title of “Sadabahar”.
Migration to Pakistan
Noor Jahan never proved a loss for Pakistan. When Indians asked her to stay in India at the time of Indo-Pak separation. Madam Noor Jehan replied proudly that she will like to go to her birthplace 🏠. Her words were “Jahan paida hui thi wahan hi jaun gi”. It was a great loss for the Indian Film Industry as they were going to lose a gem 💎. Noor left India and moved to her birthplace Kasur near Lahore, Pakistan.
Love for Pakistan and the Patriotic songs
Madam Noor Jahan also presented some patriotic songs 💞 at the time of the Indo-Pak War. Army songs of Noor Jahan are still remembered on patriotic days today. Her army songs gone hit even after the Indo-Pak Wars because the lyrics of every song clearly describe her love for her nation. Madam’s songs for Pak Army include “Ae Rah e Haq kay Shaheedo”, Shaheedon ka Lahoo”, Ae Watan Kay Sajeelay” and many more.
Awards won by Madam Noor Jahan
Madam won about 15 Nigar awards for being the best female playback singer. Eight awards for being the best Urdu songs singer and many more on singing Punjabi songs. Moreover, she got the eighth position in the list of most influential character ❤️️ after Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It was a huge honour for her. She also got a gold medal by “Z.A Bukhari” in 1945 for the movie “Zeenat”.
In 1996, Malik-e-Taranum was granted with the award Sitara-e-Imtiaz. In 1991, Madam was the first Pakistani singer 🎶 who performed in R.A Hall, London.
Noor Jahan Punjabi Songs
Noor Jehan Punjabi songs are still on the tongue of our ancestors as the songs are full of love ❤️️ and affection. Many singers are also remaking her songs to make the new generations familiar with Madam Noor Jahan. Her song “Tere Naal me laiyan akhiyan” is also sung by Qurat-ul-Ain Baloch for a Pakistani drama serial named Mann Mayal. Noor Jehan Punjabi songs are also remembered in desi weddings today. Her voice for Punjabi songs was melodious. Jahan also worked in four Punjabi movies.
The Legend Died
In 1986, on the tour of America, she felt severe chest pain which resulted in Angina Pectoris. Later, the doctors 😷 prescribed for bypass surgery. She was ill and hospitalized in Karachi where she suffered a heart attack. In 2002, she died of heart failure 💔. Her tomb is located in the Gizri Graveyard in Karachi. Her funeral was attended by 400,000 people. Every eye was sobbing with sadness 😔 as a legend passed away leaving Pakistan behind.
Pervaiz Musharraf was the president of Pakistan at that time. He said that
“Madam Noor Jahan deserves a state funeral”.
He ordered to take the body from Karachi to Lahore. But Noor’s daughters insisted on burying her in Karachi. In 2017, Google Doodle commemorated her 91st birthday 🎂.
